2022-23 season wrap: Club champions, premierships and having a Blast

CLUB CHAMPIONS: (From left) Centenary Cup captain Steve Wotton, First Grade captain Tom Belmonte, President Ben McNiven, Second Grade player Johnty French and Third Grade captain Mick Curran with the W.C. McCarthy Cup.

Saturday's First Grade grand final brought to a close a successful 2022-23 season for Orange CYMS Cricket Club.

The highlight of the season was winning the W.C. McCarthy Cup, awarded to the Orange District Cricket Association's (ODCA) champion club.

CYMS claimed the club championship courtesy of minor premierships for our First, Second and Third Grade teams, while our Centenary Cup team finished the regular season in second place.

While it was disappointing that none of these teams won their respective competitions it was a terrific achievement to be crowned Orange's club champions.

There were premierships won over the course of the season:

  • Our First Grade side won the Bathurst Orange Inter-District Cricket (BOIDC) two-day competition

  • We won the ODCA T20 Cup (combined Third Grade and Centenary Cup teams) in January

  • Our Under-13s won the Orange District Junior Cricket Association (ODJCA) competition

PREMIERS: Under-13s players Bradley Johnson, Joshua Paton, Abhi Biju, Archie Cox, Toby Holmes, Vaughn Bieniek, Wil Kennedy, Byron Seymour-Burgess, Spencer Chapman and Stephen Wright with coach Beau Cox and helper Chris Wright.

In addition to these premierships, our First Grade, Third Grade and Under-11s Green teams played in grand finals, while Second Grade, Centenary Cup and Under-14s Green made finals.

There was also fantastic growth among the club's most junior programs, with 30 kids aged from 4-8 taking part in either the Junior Blasters or Master Blasters.

These were run by the club on Monday and Thursday afternoons respectively and introduced these children to the game and its skills.

Both of these programs were capped off by presentations where the kids were rewarded for their time, effort and improvement with medals, vouchers and other club items.

ON THEIR WAY: Our Junior Blasters players with their medals and club caps at Wade Park after their final session of the season.

Our Blasters programs and juniors teams were coached and helped by a fantastic group of volunteers: Riley Krause, Cath and John Gander, Matt French, Toby Dickinson, Chris Novak, Ben Chiarella, Nathan Fardell, Ellie and Jeff Rinaldo, Peter Curran, Ant Robinson, Fran Dickinson, Beau Cox, Chris Wright, Angus Gorman, Johnty French, Roger Heath, Al Dhatt and Kate Nesic.

All of these people and the wonderful group of parents and guardians of our Blasters and Juniors players contributed a wonderful season for all of our boys and girls.

Across all ages and grades there were some awesome individual performances, including players who topped the run-scoring or wickets-taking lists in their respective competitions:

  • Charlie Tink: 391 runs @ 65.17 in BOIDC First Grade (two-day games)

  • Johnty French: 24 wickets @ 10.71 in ODCA Second Grade

  • William Davis: 22 wickets @ 9.5 in ODCA Third Grade

  • Cooper Biddle: 389 runs @ 77.8 in ODJCA Under-14s

  • Spencer Chapman: 337 runs @ 56.17 in ODJCA Under-13s

These players and many more will receive awards at the club's 2022-23 juniors and seniors presentation, to be held at the Ophir Hotel on Sunday 30 April. More details about the event are here.
