Coughlan and Reed the best on-field in 2023-24; Ferguson and Garvin lead charge off it

Updated: Apr 30

Two of Orange CYMS Cricket Club's finest all-rounders were the recipients of the club's highest awards at the 2023-24 season presentation on Sunday 28 April.

First Grade's Joey Coughlan and junior Holly Reed took out the major on-field awards after fantastic seasons with both bat and ball.

Coughlan was named Jack Moroney Cricketer of the Year for his outstanding performances in BOIDC First Grade and Bonnor Cup matches where he scored 776 runs at an average of 55.43 and took 24 wickets at a miserly 12.96.

Coughlan was also named the club's Tony Kelly All-Rounder of the Year and First Grade's Best and Fairest, as well as receiving awards for two centuries and a five-wicket haul.

Reed, who was unfortunately absent from the presentation at the Ophir Hotel, played in the club's under-16s and Centenary Cup teams, netting 209 runs at the average of 34.83 while also taking 21 wickets at the incredible rate of just 6.57.

In addition to her major prize, Reed claimed the bowling award in her under-16s team, as well as an award for a five-wicket haul.

She also received a Junior Development Award, along with Stephen Wright and Spencer Chapman. These are presented to promising cricketers under the age of 18 and provide a registration subsidy of $100 to assist with playing fees for the following season.

Meanwhile, the hard work and contributions of Jo Ferguson and Sam Garvin were acknowledged through well-deserved senior and junior Clubperson of the Year awards.

Ferguson was awarded the Peter Falvey Clubperson of the Year Award in recognition of her time, effort and leadership in a number of important areas for the club this season.

In addition to helping to run the Junior Blasters sessions, she was instrumental in starting the inaugural Orange Women's Cricket League in October 2023, working with others in the club, ODCA and Cricket NSW to form the League.

Garvin took out the Michael Powell Junior Clubperson of the Year in recognition of his help with Junior Blasters and women's cricket training and matches.

Third Grade vice-captain Riley Krause, Second Grade vice-captain Brett Wykes and First Grade batter Charlie Tink took out the remaining major playing awards.

Krause was named Steve Luck Player of the Finals for his heroics in Third Grade's run to the Orange District Cricket Association premiership. He took 2-7 off 3 overs in the semi-final against Gladstone before taking a remarkable 6-3 off 3.4 overs in his Player-of-the-Match performance in the grand final rout of Spring Hill.

Wykes was named Pat Fahey Wicketkeeper of the Year courtesy of his 377 runs at 26.93 and 11 dismissal - 9 catches and 2 stumpings - in ODCA Second Grade.

Tink won the Bill McAuliffe under-21s Player of the Year award for his 476 runs at 31.73 for Orange CYMS First Grade, Bonnor Cup, Orange Opens and Central West Colts teams.

Members of the club's premiership-winning Third Grade team were presented with white cricket vests embroidered with the club logo and details of their win.

The season's presentation was also memorable as the first to acknowledge the club's women's teams.

CYMS White, Red, Blue, Green and Gold played in the Orange Social Women's Cricket League in February and March, representing the club in matches played on Friday evenings.

In addition to batting and bowling awards for each team, there was a presentation to players chosen as Best and Fairest for their respective teams: Kendall Graham, Sandra Schmich, Meg McFarland, Stef Loader and Kylie Winslade.
