Prior to the start of the 2021-22 season, Orange CYMS Cricket Club announced a set of core values to help guide its players and teams.
Then-First Grade and Orange captain Hugh Le Lievre revealed the four principles which were created in consultation with past and present players and are a reflection of the standards and ideals which have underpinned this fantastic club for the last 75 years.
The values, and some of the behaviours demonstrated by them, are:
Respect: Support for clubmates; courtesy for officials; no abuse of opposition and sincere congratulations on milestones and victory; adherence to rules and spirit of the game
Pride: Behaviour which projects pride in the club, including speaking positively about the club to prospective players and sponsors; wearing correct uniforms to training and matches; and acknowledging and enjoying club successes.
Purpose: Train in a genuine attempt to improve skills and technique; be available and prepared to give your best in matches
Contribution: Volunteering on committee and in fundraising activities; assisting coordination of training; supporting and mentoring junior players; watching games other than your own; helping with covers and other tasks necessary to facilitate games; and selfless on-field efforts (backing up at non-striker's end, running strongly between wickets when not on strike, backing up throws and chasing hard to boundary in field).
That season and into the future, these values and the behaviours which exemplify them will be emphasised and encouraged by the club's leaders, starting with the Committee and team captains.
This started in the 2021-22 season with the 'John Covelli Values Awards'. These awards, named after one of the club's greatest contributors, are given to players who have demonstrated one or more of these values in their behaviour on or off the field.
